The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) was founded in 1969 to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits. Since then, WSET has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite of sought-after qualifications. It has a membership body – the Institute of Wines & Spirits – for those who have passed the WSET Diploma, its top qualification. The Diploma is viewed universally as the stepping-stone to the Master of Wine qualification.

Over 25,000 people took a WSET wine tasting course last year. The Wine & Spirit Education Trust is the leading global organization providing informative, entertaining wine courses as well as spirit courses, plus a range of sought-after qualifications, for professionals and enthusiastic amateurs. Although based in London, it currently has 365 centers in 50 countries.

The New York Wine and Culinary Center became a WSET Approved Program Provider in February 2007. The Center offers courses leading to the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Certificates in its comfortable and state-of-the-art Educational Theater. All courses are taught by WSET-certified wine instructors.

5-Day Course: March 13, 14, 27, 28 and April 10, 2010, 10am-5:30 each day.

The Advanced Certificate Course is recommended for those who have earned the Intermediate Certificate, or have a good foundation of wine knowledge. In-depth lectures and discussions covering wines and spirits of the world are supplemented with slides and comprehensive tasting of more than 90 wines and spirits.

Successful candidates receive the internationally-recognized Advanced Certificate of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust of London, which is a prerequisite for the two-year Diploma Program. The final exam is comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions, short written answers, and a blind tasting of one wine.

There is no prerequisite for this course. However, WSET Level 2 or a comparable wine appreciation course is recommended. Please take our online quiz to find out if this level is right for you.

The Foundation Certificate Couse is an entry level qualification providing a straightforward introduction to wine styles, sale and service, and tasting technique. It is ideal for enhancing confidence and knowledge for entry level retail and restaurant employees, as well as the beginning wine enthusiast.

Successful completion of a tasting note portfolio, a food and wine matching exercise, and a 30-question multiple choice exam during the course earns the student the internationally-recognized Foundation Certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in London.

The Intermediate Certificate Course is appropriate for wine enthusiasts who want to acquire in-depth knowledge of wines and spirits, and for those employed in the retail or hospitality industry. The course covers the major types of wines and spirits of the world, and includes tasting of more than 40 different types of wines and spirits.

Successful completion of the one hour 50-question multiple choice exam earns the student the internationally-recognized Intermediate Certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in London. The exam does not include wine tasting.

A Home Study option is available for students unable to participate in the classroom lectures and tastings. You receive the WSET study materials, study on your own, and take the exam at NYWCC on a date agreed upon with the instructor. For those who are able to attend classes, the in-class option provides several advantages over home study. These advantages include: the increased discipline that classes bring to your studies, networking with other students, the opportunity to have questions answered by instructors, wine tasting instruction, and wine tasting practice at each class.

There is no prerequisite for this course. However, WSET Level 2 or a comparable wine appreciation class is recommended. Please take our on-line quiz online quiz to find out if this level is right for you.

The Advanced Home Study packet includes:

If a Home Study student is not able to take the exam on a date already scheduled by the NYWCC, and a special exam date must be scheduled, an additional $250 private exam fee will be charged.
