The Golden Nose is a one-of-a-kind competition that allows consumers to award the best wines from the Finger Lakes region. The New York Wine & Culinary Center will host the event on April 17, 2010. Consumers will learn techniques of wine judging from local winemakers, and then award medals during a professionally-run competition. At this year’s event, a special “Riesling Champion” will be crowned by consumer judges.

Golden Nose was previously sponsored by the Seneca Lake Wine Trail and held in Corning, NY in 2006, 2007, and 2008. The event was suspended in 2009. The mission, spirit, and format of the event will stay the same under the management of the Center in 2010. Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, and Canandaigua Wine Trails will continue to support the event with volunteers.

The weekend consists of: Friday Night Golden Nose Kitchen Social, Golden Nose Judge Package (Friday night’s Golden Nose Kitchen Social; Saturday’s Judge Training, Judging Competition, and Award Reception), and Golden Nose Award Reception. See below for details and registration.

Itinerary
8:30-9:00am: Registration and Continental Breakfast in the lobby
9:00-11:20am: Judge Training in the Wine Spectator Educational Theater. Learn the craft of judging wines from a team of five winemakers and professional wine judges. Our intimate and specialized amphitheater setting (limited to 44 novice judges) is an enjoyable and effective place to learn the art of judging. Training sessions include how to taste wine components, flaws, superior quality, and terroir. Those who have attended Golden Nose previously will attend an advanced training session for part of the morning.
11:20am-12:00pm: Buffet Lunch in the Taste of New York Lounge
12:00pm-4:00pm: Golden Nose Competition building-wide. The actual wine judging will take place during the afternoon. Each judge will be assigned to a panel of six members with one winemaker or professional judge to lead the group. The panel leader will lend advice and help guide the novice judges through the judging process. Hundreds of wines from the Finger Lakes region will be judged and medals will be awarded to the best examples in each category. Award categories will encompass the wide variety of wine styles produced in the Finger Lakes, ranging from Ice Wine to Pinot Noir to Catawba. Each panel of judges will evaluate six flights of wine, with approximately six wines per flight.
4:00pm-5:00pm: Riesling Champion Judging. Those who have attended Golden Nose in a prior year are invited to judge an additional flight of wines to determine the Finger Lakes Riesling Champion. A new addition to the competition this year, the Riesling Champion recognizes the incredible quality of the Finger Lakes’ signature grape.
Following the judging, judges will be given a 2-3hr. break to rest and get ready for the evening. During this time, results of the competition will be calculated.
7:00pm-9:00pm: Golden Nose Award Reception. Enjoy a lavish dinner buffet prepared by the New York Wine & Culinary Center and taste award winning wines from the Golden Nose competition. Top awards, including Riesling Champion, Best of Class, and Double Gold medals, will be announced and awards presented to winery owners. Judges, winery owners, and other guests will be able to mingle and celebrate the Golden Nose while listening to live music. Admission to the Golden Nose Award Reception is included in the Judge package, while companions or members of the public may purchase tickets to this event for $50. See below for details and registration.
Overnight Accommodations are not included in the Judge Package. However, a block of rooms for Golden Nose Judges has been reserved at the Canandaigua Inn on the Lake, which is a beautiful hotel within easy walking distance from the New York Wine & Culinary Center (the parking lots are adjacent). Please contact the Inn on the Lake directly for reservations. The group rate is $114 per night and you must indicate that you are part of Golden Nose.
